  • How to play all the Natural Notes on the e string – forwards and backwards.

Do This → Action Steps ↓

  1. Start with the open E string, then “play and say” the natural notes (going “up” the fretboard – towards your body) until you reach the “E note” on the 12th fret.
  2. Start on the “E note” on the 12th fret, then “play and say” the natural notes (going “down” the fretboard – away from your body) until you reach the “open E Note”
  3. Repeat this exercise until you can play and say all the natural notes going “up” and back “down” the fretboard reasonably comfortably. (Hint: you don’t have to do it all in one day!)
  4. Practice playing and saying the notes with the BEADGCF exercise with the track below. Move on to the next step when you’re reasonably comfortable completing this step.
  5. Practice playing and saying the notes with the FCGDAEB exercise with the track below. Move on to the next step when you’re reasonably comfortable completing this step.

You should be able to play these notes & do these exercises without looking at the chart!

CONGRATULATIONS on completing this course!

Be sure to revisit these exercises as often as needed to gain confidence in knowing the mandolin fretboard.
