The 7 notes and 7 “Feelings”
Discovery ↓
- Discover the 7 notes which act as the building blocks for everything you play in music, and the 7 feelings they create – which allow you to play the same “musical” ideas all across the fretboard without thinking about the notes
The 7 “Feelings” Described
For example, here is a basic guideline of how the seven feelings ‘feel’ in a Major key. Warning: It’s not important to try to determine “exactly” what each of the notes feel like – in your mind – before playing. The key is to “experience” the notes (by playing them with real music), so you can FEEL them for yourself, and then apply your own “label” or “name” for how they sound to you. THAT is how you will learn each of the feelings so that you’ll know which feeling you want to hit as you’re playing.
As mentioned, the descriptions below are NOT meant to be absolute, but only a general guideline to point you in the right direction. However, the magic comes from playing and feeling them for yourself.
- The tonic feels like “home.”
- The 2nd may feel a little “moody”…
- The 3rd may feel “innocent.”
- The 3rd feels “happy.”
- The 5th may feel like a cavalry charging into battle.
- The 6th feels dark and “mean”, or a little sad.
- The 7th feels like “mysterious”
